Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSW)

Commonly known as garbage, MSW is a subset of solid waste and is what ends up in landfills. In most cases a significant amount of materials in your garbage containers can be diverted from landfill through waste reduction and recycling. “Diversion” is used to track the amount of waste materials kept out of landfills. This is not only good for the environment and a better use of resources, but also reduces your trash bills due to fewer trash pickups. ZWS works with you and your garbage hauler to provide and implement recommendations for MSW management. Your diversion rate is monitored and the data is made available to you through reports provided on a quarterly basis.

In 1998, Americans generated approx. 220 million tons of municipal solid waste of which: 71.8 % (158.1 million tons) landfilled or combusted; 22% (49 million tons) was recovered for recycling; and 6 % (13.1 million tons) was recovered for composting. (EPA).

The average American generates approx. 4.5 pounds of waste per day (1998 Statistics, EPA). This number is higher than other
developed countries, such as European countries, which generate around two to three pounds per person per day.
