E-Waste

The dependence on electronic products to make life and business more convenient, leads to the stockpile of these used, obsolete products (e-waste).  Computer monitors, CPUs, keyboards, mouse, microwaves, TVs, VCRs, and any other electronics containing circuit boards – all contain various toxic materials which are potentially harmful when released into the environment.

Recycling e-waste promotes the safe management of hazardous components such as lead, mercury, and other toxic materials; and supports the recovery and reuse of valuable materials. Reusing or recycling of consumer electronics can save you money; saves valuable resources; and reduces regulatory oversight.

Nearly 250 million computers will become obsolete in the next five years and mobile phones will be discarded at a rate of 130 million per year by 2005 (EPA).

In addition to lead, electronics can contain chromium, cadmium, mercury, beryllium, nickel, zinc, and brominated flame-retardants. When electronics are not disposed of or recycled properly, these toxic materials can present problems.

3.2 million tons of e-waste was disposed in US landfills in 1997, a figure that was projected to quadruple in a few years (EPA).
