Every client has specific waste management needs based on factors such as business type, operational processes, types of wastes generated, space constraints, employee awareness and city-specific regulations. Our integrated solid waste resource management program is customized to address these factors based on your specific solid waste management parameters.

Periodic audits will be documented to provide information on all aspects of the program. We will also provide comprehensive monthly reporting on landfill diversion, material characterization and cost savings achieved

Zero Waste Solutions Inc. serves clients in the following industries:

High Tech
Bio Tech
Corporate Offices
Government

For most materials, recycling is more efficient with a building-wide or property-wide collection system. This is simply due to the advantages and efficiencies of economies of scale. Recycling of office wastes, such as paper and cardboard, has been seen to generate substantial savings from avoided disposal costs.

  • We will provide your office with collection systems that suit your needs or we'll re-arrange existing systems to facilitate source separation and least amount of co-mingling for optimum recycling.
  • Post informational signs near recycling and composting bins to let employees know what you are doing and why.
  • Waste management awareness training can be provided to all staff. This training is aimed at influencing sound waste management practices amongst employees as well as improving the awareness of waste legislation that applies to contractors.
  • Develop an integrated waste management plan to incorporate every feasible opportunity to reduce or recycle and to achieve savings in disposal costs.
  • For equipment such as computers and electronics we can research possible reuse sources such as schools and institutions, which have a need or use for this equipment, thus preventing the costs associated with dumping.

Retail
Commercial

The bulk of waste generated by retail stores is in the form of packaging. Larger retails stores also have cafeterias, food courts and staff areas where additional packaging and food wastes are generated. Most retail chains have corporate policies, which promote environmentally sustainable business practices including waste minimization and recycling. We can help you meet this commitment.

  • To begin implementing a waste management program we will provide collection points for specific materials. These points will be easily recognizable and accessible to the public.
  • We can also set up a food waste collection system for composting of food wastes from Cafeterias and other areas where food scraps are generated.
  • Many retailers choose to launch additional campaigns that allow the public to bring specific items for recycling e.g. Greeting cards, clothes for donation etc. We can help you set up such a program in order to help the success of your campaign.

Educational Institutions

Organized groups such as schools and other educational establishments have shown tremendous potential for implementing successful waste reduction programs. An example of this can be seen in various case studies of waste minimization drives at schools including UC Berkeley's environmental initiatives case study.

  • We can set up your waste reduction program and provide a student and/or staff orientation to create awareness of how to make the program work efficiently.
  • Depending on how the program is set up, students can participate in running the program or coordinating recycling collection drives to support the program.
  • Increasing the flow of reusable and recyclable materials can even generate extra funds for school departments and groups depending on the type of recyclate materials.
  • We can provide signs and instruction sheets for facilities staff.

Construction

According to estimates, between 60- 80 percent of a builder's waste stream is recyclable. Builders can do their part to conserve natural resources and landfill space by looking at their waste stream and seeing resources instead of refuse. The disposal of wastes generated from construction activities represent a significant portion of operating expenses in addition to consuming valuable landfill space. Recycling construction materials may often be a more economical option than disposal due to the high volume and bulk of waste materials generated.

  • At the beginning of the construction process, we will set up bins or other means of containment to hold separated scraps.
  • We will identify processors in the area that are interested in the collected materials.
  • There are well-established markets for the paper, cardboard, and metal that the building materials and major appliances are packed in. These materials could both generate income and reduce disposal costs.
  • Separation of materials on a job site provides a specific, clean waste stream that can be processed into products made from materials that would otherwise be discarded.
  • Most construction occurs in phases, which increases the potential of separating and compiling similar materials.
  • Once the materials are collected we will haul the recyclables as well as the non-recyclables to the appropriate transfer station for recycling and/or disposal.

Property Management

Property Managed complexes have a good opportunity to reduce costs in numerous areas related to waste management including disposal. We can set-up recycling programs in buildings they operate, to addressing not only the traditional waste stream, but also include other related programs that direct tenants on the proper disposal of newspaper, glass, beverage containers, phone books, carpet squares and even grass clippings.

  • We will begin by finding out how waste is handled now. For example, is each tenant required to bring his or her garbage to a central dumpster or are there garbage chutes on each floor? Is there a storage room in the ground floor or is garbage stored outside the building?
  • We will then design a recycling system that fits into your situation. For example, if each tenant places their garbage into a dumpster in the back of the building, then we may set up a separate container for recyclables in that area.
  • We will provide the necessary collection systems on your property for various waste streams depending on when and where they are generated.
  • Provide signage on materials that can or cannot be recycled to prevent co-mingling.
  • Prepare information for tenants on how the program is to work and why it is important to participate.
  • Provide hauling services for recyclables as well as trash.

Restaurants

Since restaurants & food outlets are points of large-scale consumption, recycling could be a key component of business operations as a means of reducing disposal costs. Due to the high content of organic & recyclable waste generated, this is an ideal area to implement a waste management program.

  • We can set up a collection system to keep recyclables and wet waste separate.
  • We can ensure that recycling and trash bins look different from each other and are clearly marked and conveniently located in the kitchen and bar areas so that employees will use them even during rush hours.
  • We will provide information for employees about what gets tossed in which bins.
  • If your establishment is self-serve, we can provide signs letting customers know that you are recycling and what they should do with their bottles and cans. Letting your patrons know that you recycle is good for your image.
  • We can also set up a system for you to collect food wastes for Composting. This innovative recycling concept transforms kitchen scraps from Bay Area restaurants into nutrient-rich compost-, which could potentially be used by organic farmers to grow produce, which will then end up in Farmer's markets. This is such a great way to close the recycling loop!

HealthCare

Non-hazardous medical waste makes up nearly 3/4 of the waste generated in a hospital. Surveys on the composition of wastes from hospitals indicate that among the waste materials generated, the highest percentage is from:

1) paper
2) food and other organics
3) plastics.

This presents significant waste reduction opportunities as all 3 materials have high recyclable potential.
Although waste compositions vary from one hospital to another, it is a good strategy to target the largest components of the waste stream to begin with.

  • We can set up a waste specific collection system for non-hazardous waste, arrange to have items picked up for recycling, and provide educational signage and materials for staff.
  • We can set up a food waste collection system for composting of kitchen and food wastes from hospital cafeterias and kitchens where food scraps are generated.
  • If your hospital has a large landscaped area, yard trimmings may be a much higher percent of your waste stream. We can assess the feasibility of composting or grass cycling to reduce the use of fertilizers and the costs associated with bagging of yard trimmings and grass clippings.

Hospitality

The hospitality industry is an "umbrella" term for Accommodation, Cafes & Restaurants, Pubs & Clubs, Convention centers, and Food service operations in colleges, airports, schools, and shopping malls. In California the accommodation industry alone produces approximately 600,000 tons of garbage every year (CIWMB statistics). As a result of the large amount of waste generated by these hospitality services, there are strong financial and managerial benefits to pursue an integrated solid waste reduction program. Besides reducing waste and saving money, these actions can increase employee morale and customer satisfaction.

  • We can set up an integrated solid waste program, which covers all aspects of the waste generated from these hospitality services. We will explore feasible alternatives for environmentally preferable products and services for your specific business.
  • We can set up a food waste collection system for composting of kitchen and food wastes from cafeterias and kitchens where food scraps are generated.

The benefits for your business are:

Cost savings, health and safety benefits, reduced risk of liability, environmental stewardship, and enhanced public image which is so vital to this industry.
